Woodbriar Joins Statewide Effort to Improve Quality of Care for Seniors
Wilmington, MA - A local nursing home has joined a statewide project
designed to help nursing homes improve the quality of care provided in
their facilities. Some 74 nursing homes in the Commonwealth are participating
in the initiative.
Woodbriar of Wilmington is participating in the Massachusetts Nursing
Home Quality Initiative (NHQI). The effort is part of a larger, national
project driven by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
to enhance the quality of nursing home care nationwide.
The Massachusetts initiative is a two-pronged effort to help nursing
homes improve care for their residents, while. At the same time, enabling
local residents to make more informed decisions about nursing homes through
the use of "Nursing Home Compare" on the Medicare website, www.medicare.gov.
The website provides detailed information about nursing homes throughout
the state and provides free checklists and other information residents
can use in determining how to select the best facility for themselves
or a loved one.
Local residents without access to the web can also call the toll-free
Medicare hotline at 1-800-MEDICARE to request free information and answer
questions.
Medicare beneficiaries are also encouraged to visit nursing homes and
make observations. Talk to administrators and staff, and ask questions
about quality of care issues.
As part of the statewide initiative, participating nursing homes have
opportunities to examine their practices and collaborate with other nursing
homes to share information about "best practices", enhance learning,
and accelerate improvement.
The statewide effort in Massachuse5ts is being spearheaded in MassPOR,
a non-profit quality improvement organization based in Waltham.
